Essay Nikolaus Gansterer - by Pieter Van Bogaert - April 2011

Traces of the other (and of interventions, modes of being, and interpretations)

On Traces of Spaces by Nikolaus Gansterer

Pieter VAN BOGAERT

Proposal Nikolaus - March 2010

TRACING THE TRACES. TRACES OF SPACES.

A proposal for several mapping stations in and outside.

In September 2010 artist Nikolaus Gansterer turns the city of Gent into a generator of tracings and lets them narrate themselves through the medium of expanded drawing.

The “lines of thoughts,” that are created through the discovery and experience of the city by the artist as foreign to the city, should be transformed and made visible through this process into “lines of things.”

Essay Juliana Borinski - by Pieter Van Bogaert - February 2011

The image in all its states

On the work of Juliana Borinski

Pieter Van Bogaert

Juliana Borinski has a thing about images. That’s what she’s trained for. She has a thing about movement. That’s what her images aim to show. She has a thing about media. That’s what images and movement are made with. She uses media not – as is most often the case – to capture images, but – she is after all an artist – to set them free. She is interested in the way media move; the way they try to escape the label that attaches to them.

‘short films for you’

it’s easy to become comfortable if you keep doing the same thing
this residency is about taking risks and challenging my established methods
For the past few years I’ve been making headphone based experiences, usually designed to be listened to in public spaces. The work leans towards the epic and the cinematic, and the making process stretches out over many months, there are almost never physical objects involved and I often work with the same team of collaborators.

Geert -Jan Hobijn

Yokomono-Pro Gent

Yokomono-Pro is a car horn concert performed by vehicles moving through a city. Each city and each type of vehicle has its own tone and each combination results in a different concert. The project was developed and written as a commission by the International Sonic Residency 2008 for The KHOJ Artists’ Association in New Delhi and was presented one year later at the India Art Summit. In New Delhi we focused on the traffic and the amazing amount of noise it produces. One of the most prominent noisemakers is the three-wheel taxi, which uses its horn very frequently in situations where we would use our indicators, headlights or mirrors. Taxis are the most recognisable means of transport here, playing a dominant role in the city’s soundscape. We arranged for the collaboration of thirty so-called ‘tuck tuck’ taxis and operated their horns via remote by means of transmitters. By playing this ‘taxi horn choir’ in combination with spatial manoeuvres an urban sound choreography was created. Yokomono-pro has also been performed at the Transmediale in Berlin and at TodaysArt in The Hague.

Yokomono Pro is a project by Staalplaat Soundsystem. Geert-Jan Hobijn from Staalplaat Soundsystem is in residence at timelab in 2011. Jens Ewald is responsible for the technical realization.

artist residency

timelab invites artists from diverse backgrounds to take part in a residential programme. For some the link with technology is all-important; others prefer to start from a contemplative standpoint about, for example, man’s role in society.
