Els Viaene's research track

Els Viaene’s work always starts from sound, a sound from a landscape. Those sounds or ‘field recordings’ are later on added into a composition, a live performance or an installation. The sounds bring up images, draw a new landscape, and transform a space. They are separated from their source and are placed into a new context. Their image vanishes.

During her research track she tries to reconnect sounds to images. An image found in landscapes. Afterwards, a new landscape emerges into image and sound. It’s a language in which sounds creates new forms of images and vice versa.

On the one hand, she refers to images originating from simple materials and on the other hand to transformation processes. Which combinations are possible between sounds, materials, objects and natural transformation processes?

She investigates several subjects:

-       Which transformation processes in matter can we generate? Which sounds can we get out of this? Or how can sound transform certain matter? How can it influence a process?

-       The materialization of sound, an investigation of several materials without detaching the sounds from the material.

Els wants to re-identify and extend her sound language, beginning from a material, a matter or a transformation process.
